Alex Murphy To Enroll Early At Duke

Apr 21, 2011 3:22 PM

Highly rated basketball recruit Alex Murphy will graduate from high school a year early and enroll at Duke in 2011 rather than 2012, his father confirmed Tuesday night.

Jay Murphy, who played four seasons in the NBA in the mid- to late-1980s, referred to a quote his son gave Fox Sports columnist Jeff Goodman, saying Alex considered this a difficult decision but one that's best for him.

"We're excited about the opportunity for Alex," Jay Murphy said. "We know it's a great program, and we know he's going to have to work harder than he ever did before."

Murphy was rated the No. 11 player overall in the class of 2012 by Scout.com.

Rivers Eager To Play In Front Of Michael Jordan

Apr 15, 2011 10:28 AM

Duke-bound Austin Rivers is where he wants to be.

"I can't tell you how many days of school I've missed," Rivers, a senior at Winter Park (Fla.) High, said, rattling off a schedule that has taken him from Chicago to Baltimore to Portland, Ore., and finally to Charlotte with two brief stopovers in Orlando, Fla.

"This game is different. At the (Nike Hoops) Summit we played for our country. At the McDonald's game, we played for kids who are having a tough time.

"In this one, you're playing for the best player who ever played. You have him (the Jordan Brand logo) on your chest. You have to play hard. If I didn't, I'd feel like I was disrespecting (Michael Jordan)."

Duke On Verge Of Adding Two More Banner Recruits

Apr 12, 2011 2:08 PM

Duke could be adding two more standouts to their class very soon.

DeAndre Daniels is likely to deliver his pledge to coach Mike Krzyzewski very soon, while Alex Murphy, a top 20 prospect in the Class of 2012, has apparently been cleared to graduate early from St. Mark’s School near Boston, allowing him to potentially enroll at Duke this fall, a year earlier than originally planned.

Up to this point, Duke was already in possession of a stellar recruiting class that most experts had ranked as one of the top three or four in the country. The original quartet of signees included players, according to ESPN, ranked second (Austin Rivers), 28th (Michael Gbinije), 35th (Marshall Plumlee) and 38th (Quinn Cook) in the 2011 class.

Now, with Daniels and Murphy likely to join the mix, the Blue Devils may stake their claim as having the No. 1 class in the nation.

Execs Overwhelmingly Support Age Limit Increase In New Labor Deal

Apr 8, 2011 3:49 PM

Quite a few things are going to come up in the NBA’s next collective bargaining agreement:  revenue sharing, length of contracts, and the salary cap, to name a few.

With the owners and players association likely to trade concessions, several high-ranking NBA team executives told Yahoo! Sports’ Marc J. Spears they wouldn’t be surprised if the age limit in the new CBA is pushed to two years in college and 20 years old by the end of that calendar year.

One NBA general manager says about two-thirds of teams are in favor of that change.

Austin Rivers, a Duke-bound shooting guard, says he is in no rush to leave for the NBA, but is disappointed about potentially losing the opportunity to make a choice.

“I don’t think it’s fair to a lot of guys who are ready to go,” Rivers said Thursday after practice at the Nike Hoop Summit. “We’re going to have guys in our class that are going to be ready to play after one year. There are certain people that are able to make that jump and you’re trying to tell them they can’t make that jump and they have to wait another year, risk another injury or something like that? At the end of the day it should be up to the player. It’s his life. It’s his choice.”

Duke Inks Nation's Third Ranked Recruiting Class

Apr 8, 2011 10:09 AM

In addition to forward Michael Gbinije, the Blue Devils also have three McDonald's All-Americans signed in center Marshall Plumlee and guards Quinn Cook and Austin Rivers.

All four are ranked in ESPN's top 100 players in the class, giving the Blue Devils the No. 3 overall class behind Kentucky and St. John's.

On Thursday, when discussing his decision to turn pro with reporters, Kyrie Irving let slip that 6-8 small forward DeAndre Daniels may be pledging -- or may have already pledged -- to join the Blue Devils.

Daniels considers Kansas, Texas, Kentucky and San Diego State among his finalists along with Duke. He visited Kansas, Kentucky and Texas last December and has yet to visit San Diego State.

Irving Hints At DeAndre Daniels' Commitment To Duke

Apr 7, 2011 6:15 PM

If Kyrie Irving’s comments during a telephone conference with reporters this afternoon are any indication, Class of 2011 forward DeAndre Daniels may soon be committed to the Blue Devils. Irving was asked if he had given thought to how good Duke might have been next season if he had decided to return.

“That’s something I’ve thought about considerably because of the talent that we’ll have next year,” Irving said. “I think this year’s team was really special and I think next year’s team would be really special if I were to return.

“I think we have about five recruits coming in with the addition of DeAndre Daniels. That’s five recruits. So it would be really special, so that would give me a chance to lead the team. . . .If I were to return, it would be a really special team.”

Daniels, a 6-foot-8 forward ranked 9th in his class by Rivals.com, has not announced a commitment.

Irving Weighing Options In Regards To Draft

Apr 5, 2011 10:37 AM

Kyrie Irving spent the weekend at home in New Jersey but isn't ready to say whether he's returning to play for Duke next season.

Considered the No. 1 prospect for this summer's NBA draft, Irving said via Twitter on Monday that he needs more time to decide if he's turning pro.

"I'll have my decision made up in the next week or so," Irving posted on Monday around 4:30 p.m.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski has said he will support whatever decision Irving makes.
